Choosing led lamps & globes
First, match the base. E27 and B22 are the common household fittings in South Africa, E14 suits smaller decorative fittings, and GU10 is standard for downlights and spotlights. Then choose by lumens rather than watts. Lumens measure light output, and LED lamps use far less power than the incandescent or halogen lamps they replace. Pick a colour temperature for the space: warm white (around 3000K) for homes and hospitality, cool white (around 4000K) for kitchens and work areas, daylight (around 6500K) for task and utility areas. If the lamp will run on a dimmer, choose a model listed as dimmable and check that the dimmer suits LED loads. In enclosed fittings, check the product notes for suitability.
