Choosing led downlighters
Start with the ceiling. The cut-out diameter determines which fittings will fit an existing installation, so check it first when replacing old halogen or CFL downlights. Next, choose by light output rather than wattage. Lumens tell you how much light a fitting delivers, and efficient LEDs give more light per watt. For living spaces and hospitality, a warm 2700–3000K creates a softer atmosphere. Offices, kitchens and retail usually suit a neutral 4000K. Tilt downlights let you direct light onto artwork or displays, and anti-glare models set the light source deeper for visual comfort. In bathrooms and covered outdoor areas, check the IP rating: IP44 and above is a common choice near water.
